In Stand with Palestine, Maldives Blocks Israeli Travelers

The move, described by Maldivian authorities as an expression of “resolute solidarity” with Palestinians, marks a significant diplomatic stance in response to the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza.

President Mohamed Muizzu announced the measure on Tuesday, stating that the policy reflects the nation’s opposition to “continuing atrocities and ongoing acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.” His office emphasized that the legislation demonstrates the government’s firm position and would take effect immediately.

According to a statement released by the president’s office, the decision represents “a clear reflection of our stand against the ongoing atrocities in Palestine” and highlights the country’s continued “advocacy for accountability for violations of international law.”

The Maldives, the statement said, remains active in voicing condemnation of Israeli atrocities across international forums.

The bill was swiftly approved by the People’s Majlis (the Maldives Parliament) before being ratified by the president.

A spokesperson for President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to the policy, noting his consistent support for the creation of an independent Palestinian state in line with United Nations resolutions and principles of international law.

Although the Maldives severed diplomatic relations with Israel in the 1970s, Israeli citizens had previously been allowed to visit the Indian Ocean island nation. The newly ratified ban reverses that policy.
