Pakistan agrees to increase ties with Syria’s HTS

Pakistan government has initiated a move to increase the ties with HTS-led government of Syria to boost bilateral exchanges for further strengthening their relations.

The understanding was reached during meeting between Pakistani delegation led by Additional Foreign Secretary (Middle East), Shehryar Akbar Khan and Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad Al-Shaibani in Damascus today.

The United States Government recently removed sanctions on Syria. This development follows a directive from President Donald Trump on May 13, 2025, to cease U.S.

Syria’s current President is Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Jolani. He assumed the presidency for the transitional period on January 29, 2025, after leading the offensive that toppled the previous government. Al-Sharaa, formerly the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group with past links to Al-Qaeda.
